Where Echoes keeps your conversations

Echoes stores your conversations on your device: in your browser for the extension, in a database file on your computer for the desktop app. Your settings, labels and favorites sync to your Echoes account so they follow you to another device.

Why it matters

You paste contracts, code and health questions into AI chats. Before you install a tool that reads all of them, you should know where the text goes. This page lists it, based on what the current versions of Echoes do.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Conversations stay on your device

The extension keeps chat titles and messages in your browser's own storage. The desktop app keeps them in a file named echoes.db on your computer. For ChatGPT, the extension doesn't store messages: it asks ChatGPT for them when you search or export.

  2. 2

Your setup syncs to your account

Echoes copies your settings, labels, which chats carry which labels, your favorites, which accounts are switched on, your last 30 searches and your usage counts to your Echoes account. That is how your labels appear when you sign in on a second computer. It doesn't copy the text of your chats.

  3. 3

Echo sends what it needs to answer

Ask Echo a question and Echoes sends the question, your label and project names and the titles of up to 20 matching chats to the Echoes AI server. It doesn't send the messages inside those chats.

  4. 4

Summaries go through the AI you pick

A summary runs through the service you chose in Settings → Summarization: your own Claude, Gemini or Perplexity account, or OpenAI with your API key. The desktop app can also summarize with the AI model on your computer, which keeps the text on your machine.

  5. 5

    Remove data from Echoes

In Settings → Accounts, Delete on an account removes it and its conversations from Echoes. Your chats on the platform stay. Settings → General → Clear Cache empties the extension's local copy and downloads it again.

FAQ

Does Echoes read my chats on its servers?

No. Your chat text stays on your device. Echo sees the titles of matching chats when you ask it a question.

If I delete an account in Echoes, are my ChatGPT chats deleted?

No. Delete in Settings → Accounts removes the account from Echoes. To delete chats on the platform, use Delete Conversation on the chat, which does delete it there.
