ChatGPT and Claude have their own search. Do you still need Echoes?
Each AI searches its own history. Echoes searches all of them at once, with operators, date filters and labels. Where the built-in search is enough and where it isn't.

ChatGPT has a search box above its chat list. Claude lets you search past chats, and on paid plans it can pull earlier chats into a new answer. Gemini, Grok and the rest have their own versions. If you use one AI, the built-in search may cover what you need.
The trouble starts with the second AI. Each built-in search sees one platform and one account. A question you asked "somewhere" means opening every site and searching each one.
What the built-in search gives you
- Free with the AI you already use, nothing to install.
- Results from that platform, signed in to that account.
- On Claude paid plans, the option to let Claude read past chats when it answers.
What Echoes adds
| Task | Built-in search | Echoes |
|---|---|---|
| Search ChatGPT and Claude together | Two searches on two sites | One search |
| Search a work and a personal account | Sign out and in again | Both at once, or pick one |
| Exclude a word | Varies by platform | python NOT django |
| Exact phrase | Varies by platform | "lease termination" |
| Limit by date | Varies by platform | date:last30days or a custom range |
| Group chats from different AIs | Not possible | Labels, favorites, projects |
| Export many chats at once | Full account export only | Pick chats, export to Markdown, JSON or HTML |
An example
You compared lease clauses with ChatGPT in March and asked Claude to redraft one in April. In October the landlord replies. In Echoes you type "lease termination" date:last6months, and both chats come back in one list with the match count on each. You label both Apartment so the next search takes one click.
When the built-in search is enough
If you use one AI with one account and your history fits on a few screens, stay with the built-in search. Echoes earns its place once you have two AIs, two accounts, or a few hundred chats. The search all platforms tutorial shows the setup.
