How to back up your AI conversations before they disappear

Platforms change retention rules, lock accounts and hide old chats. Two ways to keep your own copy: export from the extension, or sync to Echoes Desktop.

Your chat history lives on the AI company's servers. If they change how long they keep chats, lock your account, or you cancel a subscription, the history can go with it. Keeping your own copy takes a few minutes.

Option 1: export from the Chrome extension

Select the chats you want, from any platform, and export them in one batch to Markdown, JSON or HTML. Markdown opens in any notes app. JSON suits scripts. HTML keeps the formatting and prints to PDF. Lite includes 5 exports a month; Plus and Lifetime have no cap. The export tutorial covers the steps.

Each platform also offers a full account export, often a zip file sent by email. That works for a one-off archive. Exporting from Echoes lets you pick specific chats across platforms and get them in the same format.

Option 2: sync to Echoes Desktop

Echoes Desktop stores every chat it syncs in a local database on your computer. You can keep chatting on the official websites; Desktop picks up those chats too. Once synced, a chat stays readable and searchable in Desktop if the platform hides it, your account has a problem, or you are offline.

Which to use

Use exports when you need files to share or feed into another tool. Use Desktop when you want a running copy that keeps itself up to date. Many people do both: Desktop as the archive, exports for the chats they send to colleagues.
